The kitchen has become so much more than a place to prepare food. Today, it’s somewhere your family and friends congregate. It’s often the heart of the home. That makes it even more important to get the kitchen lighting just right. While you don’t want the space to be overly bright, you do need it to be ambient, friend, and task-oriented. Getting the kitchen lighting right can make a big difference in the space. Here are some tips to help.
Tip 1: Work Three Lighting Styles
Depending on the size of your kitchen, you should at least consider three levels of lights. First, look at down lights, or recessed lighting, to give you an overhead light in the entire space. Second, under cabinet lighting strips can be helpful for both ambient lighting and food prep. And last, place hanging or pendant lights in just the right spots.
Tip 2: Utilize Natural Light
Kitchen lighting is easier in a space that has access to natural lighting. Of course, the sun isn’t going to shine through the window every day and it’s not going to help during the night, but take advantage of any natural lighting you have by incorporating large windows wherever you can.
Tip 3: Avoid Overdoing it
You know you want kitchen lighting to be functional, but that doesn’t mean you need to hand pendants all over the room to give you swaths of light wherever you might need to work. It’s tempting to put in too many lights to ensure you have enough, but that can overwhelm the space and give you the opposite effect.
Tip 4: Consider Dimming
You may not always want the same level of kitchen lighting. It is nice to put a dimmer on the overhead lights so you can choose how much light you want for particular occasions. When it’s darker outside, you might want the lights on at full blast. When you are having guests over and want a softer ambiance, turn the lights down a bit.
